Plantation teen named Student TV Network “Student of the Year”

By SouthFloridaReporter, July 27, 2015 – Aaron Sortal, of Plantation, a 2015 American Heritage High graduate, has been selected by the Student Television Network as its national Student of the Year.

The Student Television Network, based in San Diego and consisting of member high schools across the United States, conducts an annual convention and several competitions. As the Student of the Year, Sortal will receive a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expenses paid trip to the March 2016 national convention in Atlanta to speak at the opening ceremonies. STN selects its nationwide winner based on dedication to broadcasting, film or media and a high level of achievement in journalistic, creative or video production efforts.
Sortal, who will attend Syracuse University in the fall to study Broadcast Journalism and Business, was co-executive producer of WAHS News, American Heritage School’s broadcast news station and worked on the program for four years. He also created his own business, Sortal Films, to record family life cycle events, such as bar/bat Mitzvahs, quincereas and other occasions.
In January, Sortal was was one four students nationwide selected to work on the video crew at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. In October, Sortal was selected to show a short news feature at the All-American High School Film Festival in New York City. He also won video competitions at the Student Television Network and the Florida Scholastic Press Association conferences.

The requirements for submissions for STN Student of the Year included a recommendation letter from his adviser, Mrs. Maria Molina, an essay titled “Finding My Passion Thanks to STN,” a resume, and a 10-minute reel featuring the applicant’s best work.
