“Goof Off” Day Was Created By A 10-Year-Old – Over 40 Years Ago

goof off day

National Goof Off Day is observed annually on March 22.  Our research indicates that this day is also known as International Goof Off Day.  It is a day to relax, enjoy and goof off. Do something fun and leave the work until tomorrow.  Everybody needs to take a break from time to time.  It is often so easy to get so involved in the work and pressures in our lives. So stop, take a break, find something different!

It is a day to relax, enjoy and goof off.  Do something fun and leave the work until tomorrow.  Everybody needs to take a break from time to time.  It is often so easy to get so involved in the work and pressures in our lives. So stop, take a break, find something different!

Let any goofy idea pop into your head.  Make paper airplanes from seed packets.  Doodle pictures of poodles in puddles in Peru.  Play a game of Jenga with randomly stacked spice jars.  Or do the obvious and spend the day in your pajamas doing nothing.

Monica (Moeller) Dufour of Davidson, MI founded National Goof Off Day. Dufour is the granddaughter of Chases’ Calendar creator William D. Chase. Apparently as a 10-year old she was (what else) goofing off and called in to a radio interview her grandfather was doing. She suggested a Goof Off Day and a local newspaper liked the idea. According to official records, the first celebration took place in 1976.  In an interview with the Detroit Free Press in 1983, Moeller suggests the first event may have been a few years later. Whenever the inaugural day took place, it’s no surprise National Goof Off Day was created by a kid with the direction to do things out of the ordinary.

Faith Based Events
  1. Take the day off everything; Work, school, whatever. There are 365 other days this year to be responsible.
  2. Go somewhere unexpected. Try a local attraction that you haven’t been to in a while. Maybe a museum or a science centre or an indoor playpark. The nice thing is that since it is the middle of the week, it could very possibly be less busy than on weekends or holidays.
  3. Try a new food, or introduce your kids to a new food. How about sushi? Or something maybe a little more adventurous if you eat sushi all the time.
  4. Three words: Breakfast for dinner.
  5. What would you love to do if you had nothing on your to-do list? Do that.
  6. Regardless of whether you take the day off or not, have at least one dance party. Bonus points for doing it in public. In fact, 1 point for an in-home dance party, 3 points for a work dance party, and 5 points for a sidewalk dance party. Add 5 points if you live stream it. (Comment below with your point tally).
  7. Do your nails. Make sure they are bright and colourful and funky. (Shameless promotions: That picture below is my hand. They’re Jamberry.
  8. Take a nap.
  9. Have a coffee date. Take your kids, your spouse, or just go by yourself.
