In mid-April of 1912, the Titanic sank into history after striking an iceberg and going down, taking more than 1,500 lives with it. The sad event has been memorialized in monuments, movies and recently even a real-time live Twitter reenactment. If you missed the tweeted marathon, you can still immerse yourself in that sorrowful day through a real-time video.
James Cameron’s 1997 movie “Titanic” has a run-time of over three hours, which is longer than it took the actual ship to sink. This video re-creation takes two hours and 40 minutes and includes dramatic voice-overs from the crew. Titanic Honor and Glory, an under-development video game, posted the animation to YouTube last week.
The video marks out the time for events such as lowering lifeboats, of which there weren’t nearly enough on board to carry all the passengers and crew to safety. A distress rocket launches. The ship’s hull dips deeper into the water. It’s surprisingly riveting for a computer animation. You can almost feel the claustrophobia and isolation. The last Titanic survivor died in 2009, but the ill-fated ship continues to fascinate the world.
