By FloridaKeysNewsBureau Special to SouthFloridaReporter.com, July 26, 2015 – KEY WEST, Fla. — Dozens of men resembling Ernest Hemingway and a breed of “bull” found only in Key West starred in Saturday’s “Running of the Bulls,” a fun-filled spoof of the famed run held annually in Pamplona, Spain.
The much-safer (and slower!) Key West bull ramble featured scores of stocky, white-bearded Hemingway look-a-likes parading through Key West’s historic downtown with a “herd” of life-size fake bulls on wheels.
The Pamplona parody was a highlight of Key West’s Hemingway Days celebration, honoring the legacy of the author who lived on the island during the 1930s and wrote American literary classics including “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “To Have and Have Not.”
After the “bull run,” past look-alike winners and contestants in this year’s contest gathered outside of Sloppy Joe’s Bar to sing “Happy Birthday” to Ernest Hemingway to honor the 116th anniversary of the legendary author’s July 21st birthday.
Saturday night, aspiring Ernests chosen from 122 entrants are to compete in the final round of the “Papa” Hemingway Look-Alike Contest staged at Sloppy Joe’s Bar.
Competitors in Saturday’s round are to include Michael Groover of Savannah, Ga., husband of celebrity chef Paula Deen. Deen is in Key West supporting her husband.
Hemingway Days ends Sunday. Festival events include literary readings, a marlin tournament and a short story competition coordinated by author and Hemingway granddaughter Lorian Hemingway.
