BUENOS AIRES — It’s a horror story made in Argentina that could happen on any Florida beach!
A rare dolphin was killed on a resort beach in Santa Teresita, Argentina, over the weekend after it was pulled out of the ocean and passed around by tourists to take selfies.
It was then thrown on the sand and left to die.
Some of the selfies tweeted look particularly disturbing and show the animal appears to be in distress.
The dolphin, whose age was estimated around 6 months old, was identified as a Franciscan, a breed of sea mammals that’s much stockier and browner than our Florida dolphins. They have the particularity to be able to live both in fresh water and salt water environments. There are only 30,000 left in the world.
The British branch of the animal rights group PeTA issued a statement deriding the selfies-at-any-cost culture.
“In their efforts to get a novelty ‘selfie,’ these holidaymakers showed a naïve — and ultimately fatal — disregard for life by hauling this baby dolphin out of the sea, where he or she belonged.
“One can only imagine the trauma suffered not only by this baby, who was passed around like a toy by marauding tourists, but also his or her grieving mother.”
