WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he plans to attend the November 5 U.S. Supreme Court’s oral arguments on the legality of his administration’s sweeping tariffs. The tariffs, implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), have been challenged in court, with opponents arguing that they exceed presidential authority.

In a statement from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized the importance of the case, stating, “I think it’s one of the most important cases ever brought, because we will be defenseless against the world.” He further asserted that without the use of tariffs, the nation would lack both financial and national security.

Trump’s decision to attend the hearing is notable, as presidential appearances at Supreme Court sessions are rare. He previously attended the swearing-in ceremonies of Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh but has not been present for oral arguments.

The case, Learning Resources v. Trump, consolidates challenges to the tariffs imposed on April 2, 2025. The Supreme Court’s ruling could have significant implications for executive authority in trade policy.
