In a White House press event on Tuesday, President Donald Trump threatened to push for relocating portions of two major global sporting events, citing public safety concerns and criticism of local Democratic leadership. According to Bloomberg, Trump said he would seek to move 2026 World Cup matches from Boston and even reconsider Los Angeles as the host for the 2028 Olympics.

During the exchange with Argentina’s President Javier Milei, Trump accused Boston Mayor Michelle Wu of failing the city’s residents, declaring, “Your mayor is not good” and warning, “we could take them away.” He also targeted California Governor Gavin Newsom, signaling that similar stakes applied to Los Angeles.

Trump suggested he would use his relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a venue change, stating: “I would call Gianni … and say, ‘Let’s move it to another location’” if safety conditions warranted. He admitted the move might be unpopular but insisted it could be done “very easily.”

But in practice, authority over venue assignment lies with FIFA and the International Olympic Committee—not the U.S. president. Earlier statements by FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani reiterated that “FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes those decisions.”  Observers say any late-stage alteration would be legally and logistically fraught.
