In the tropics, we’re watching two new tropical cyclones, neither of which are a threat to South Florida. The wave near the Turks and Caicos is now Hurricane Oscar. Oscar developed quickly on Saturday and strengthened rapidly. Late Saturday afternoon, this tiny hurricane was closing in on Grand Turk with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. At that time, Oscar was moving west at 10 miles per hour, but a turn to the northeast is expected late on Monday. There’s a hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas. There’s a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning for the eastern Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin and Las Tunas and a tropical storm watch for Camaguey province. Oscar is forecast to weaken on Monday after interaction with Cuba, and the system should dissipate in the open Atlantic on Thursday.
Elsewhere, what was Potential Tropical Depression # 15 became Tropical Storm Nadine before reaching the coast of Belize on Saturday. There’s a tropical storm warning from Belize City to Cancun, Mexico, which includes Cozumel. While Nadine is weakening over Central America and should dissipate by Sunday night, it is bringing heavy rainfall to the region.
