HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa.—A person of interest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Brian Thompson was arrested after being spotted at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania following a dayslong manhunt, New York City officials said.
Police identified him as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania who was the valedictorian of his Baltimore prep school and worked in the tech industry.
Mangione was arraigned in a large courtroom in Hollidaysburg, Pa., with his wrists and ankles cuffed. Police charged him with felony weapons and forgery charges among other lesser offenses.
A Pennsylvania prosecutor said that he expects charges for homicide in the very near future.
The judge denied Mangione bail. Prosecutors said that he was carrying $8,000 in cash in antitracking bags that they said showed a level of criminal sophistication. Mangione denied carrying that much cash and said he used the bags because they were waterproof.
Wearing dark pants and a sweatshirt, he gave short answers to the judge’s questions, including a “yes, sir” as to whether he understood the charges. He didn’t have a lawyer with him, and when the judge asked if he wanted a public defender appointed to him, he asked to respond at a later time.
