By Terri Lynn, SouthFloridaReporter.com, Managing Editor, Dec. 29, 2015 – Philanthropist Jean Shafiroff introduced the New York ‘Toy Gun Exchange Program’ at a press conference on Wednesday, December 23, at Kennedy Memorial Park in Hempstead, New York. Approximately 75 area children and their parents showed up for this event.

The New York Toy Gun Exchange Program, founded by Shafiroff, is a unique program that allows children to exchange their water pistols, replica fire arms and other imitation weapons for sporting goods, educational items and safe toys. The New York Toy Gun Exchange Program is sponsored by the Hempstead School District. All of the toys were donated by Ms. Shafiroff to stop gun violence – before it starts. This is the first program of its kind in the Long Island/New York City metropolitan area.

“Toy guns give children the wrong message. If we don’t want people shooting at each other as adults, we have to start with our children. Toy guns are often mistaken as a real guns and when this happens the results are often fatal,” Shafiroff stated.
