Former homicide prosecutor Yves Laventure was sworn in Monday as Broward County’s newest general magistrate, a job that is often a stepping stone to becoming a judge.
Chief Judge Peter M. Weinstein did the honors.
Laventure has been assigned by Weinstein to work in the Probate and Guardianship division.
Having grown up in South Florida, Laventure earned an undergraduate degree at Florida International University and graduated with a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Lansing, Michigan.
After graduating in 2003, he immediately got a job with the Broward State Attorney’s Office. He eventually became a prosecutor in the homicide division.
Broward’s 11 general magistrates take the workload off the county’s judges by holding hearings and providing recommendations in the areas of family law, support enforcement, mental health, guardianship, substance abuse and juvenile dependency.
