Longtime Broward County Democratic Party power couple Barbara Sharief and Maxwell Chambers are no longer a couple.
Mother-of-five Sharief, the vice mayor of the Broward County Commission, announced the news to her constituents this morning on her Facebook account:
I wanted to say thank you for all of the well wishes and support. As many of you know, Max and I have decided to separate. As I embark on this new phase of my life, I will write my own story, based on love and strength. As women, we find courage and grace to lift ourselves up and keep moving forward for our children and our family. My focus now is moving forward in a positive direction for them. Max and I remain friends and will continue to support each other through this difficult time. – Barbara Sharief
Chambers was recently elected to the Miramar City Commission.
Although they consider themselves married, both Sharief and Chambers have talked about being hitched in a foreign country, but technically are not married in the United States.
A nurse and a healthcare entrepreneur by trade Sharief, 56, represents the county’s District 8, which includes mostly Pembroke Pines and Miramar.
Her time as a politician has been mired in controversy. In 2013, the state audited one of Sharief’s healthcare companies and found that it overbilled Medicaid by more than $500,000. She was also found to have lied on her financial disclosure forms while running for her county seat.
Maxwell is a Jamaica-born cabinet maker who parlayed his volunteering for the PTA into a seat on the Miramar commission.
Chambers has yet to comment about the split.
