Most of South Florida is now under hurricane watch as Hurricane Matthew moves northward in the Caribbean. As of 11 am Tuesday, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Seven Mile Bridge in the Lower Keys northward to Deerfield Beach. Warnings are possible in all or part of those areas Thursday night or early on Wednesday.
At 11 am Tuesday, Matthew was moving just north of the western tip of Haiti and into eastern Cuba. It was located near 18.9 North, 74.3 West, and was moving north at 10 miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds were 145 miles per hour. Hurricane warnings are in effect for the Bahamas.
Elsewhere, an elongated area of storms in the Atlantic has quickly developed into Tropical Storm Nicole. At 11 am Tuesday, it was located near 23.8 North, 60.4 West, and was moving northwest at 8 miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds were 50 miles per hour. While Nicole is forecast to meander as a ridge builds in, we’ll watch it to see if it has any influence on Matthew’s future track in a very complicated weather scenario.
