By Hilda Mitrani, For SouthFloridaReporter.com, Nov 7, 2015 – In honor of the local men and women who have served our country, Rebuilding Together Broward County is hosting its inaugural M.A.S.H. Bash on Nov. 11, Veteran’s Day, at Premier Aircraft Sales, Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, 5544 NW 23rd Ave., Hangar 15, Fort Lauderdale, 33309.
Benefiting Rebuilding Together Broward County’s Veterans Housing Initiative and honoring local veterans who have supported the initiative, the event will feature some of Broward’s hottest restaurants, including BRIO Tuscan Grille, Beauty & the Feast Bar | Kitchen and Terrazas de los Andres. Event honorees will include Angel Lunkins, an Army veteran and recipient of Rebuilding Together services; Miguel Pilgram, a third generation ex-Navy veteran and director of the Pilgram Group; Melissa Gomez, a U.S. Marine and Rebuilding Together Broward volunteer; Miami Dolphins Special Teams and JWR Construction Services.
Rebuilding Together’s Veterans Housing Initiative was created to meet the growing needs of veterans from past and present wars. The initiative serves to fill the gaps in housing modifications and repair services that retired and active service men and women struggle to meet. Working in partnership with corporate sponsors, Rebuilding Together’s Veterans Housing Initiative strives to provide safe and accessible housing for all low-income veterans.
All of this is part of Rebuilding Together’s mission to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled or veterans, live in comfort, safety, and independence.
In addition, on Oct. 24, Rebuilding Together Broward County participated in the launch of the Building a Healthier Neighborhood Program launch across the State of Florida, along with Rebuilding Together Florida affiliates in North Central Florida, Orlando and Tampa Bay. Building a Healthier Neighborhood is a comprehensive, community revitalization program that provides immediate quality of life improvements to homeowners and tenants in need. This program offers housing condition assessments, the installation of several home improvement products via a Healthy Home Kit, home maintenance educational workshops, and neighborhood beautification campaigns.
On Oct. 24, Rebuilding Together Broward County volunteers served a total of 21 households, located in the Sistrunk Corridor, which are now healthier, safer and more energy-efficient.
Along with the three other Rebuilding Together Florida affiliates, Rebuilding Together Broward County will continue implementing this program as a year-round service to ensure low-income residents live in warmth, safety and independence.
Since 2003, Rebuilding Together Broward County has rehabilitated more than 400 homes and community centers, investing more than $4 million into the community. The non-profit organization brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low income homeowners. Targeting low income elderly and disabled homeowners, as well as veterans, Rebuilding Together Broward seeks to improve health outcomes through housing activities such as home repairs, safety modifications and energy retrofits at no cost to the homeowners. While Rebuilding Together Broward assists needy homeowners year-round, it also organizes its signature event, “National Rebuilding Day,” held each spring. Next spring, volunteers, sponsors, private sector, municipal agencies, civic organizations and many others will gather on the last Saturday in April to refurbish homes and non-profit facilities in the community.
