But that constant aquatic lifestyle comes with a severe risk. According to public health data from the CDC WONDER database, Florida ranks fifth nationwide for unintentional drowning rates (averaging 2.45 deaths per 100,000 residents) and leads the entire country in total drowning fatalities. In densely populated coastal hubs like Broward and Miami-Dade counties, the danger remains constant throughout the entire calendar year.
When a swimmer encounters an ocean rip current or suddenly runs out of energy, every single second determines the outcome. Traditional ocean rescues require lifeguards or marine deputies to spot the victim, launch a watercraft, or swim out through the surf—a process that can take precious minutes while panic and physical exhaustion set in.
To bridge this crucial gap, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) is taking lifesaving response directly into the skies. BSO deputies certified as Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operators—particularly in active beachside zones like Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and Pompano Beach—are now using specialized rescue drones equipped with an innovative flotation device known as Restube®.
The operation is built for maximum speed and simplicity. The compact Restube device is mounted underneath a drone and flown directly out over the water to the struggling swimmer within seconds. Once dropped into the ocean, the device automatically inflates on contact into a four-foot-long, buoyant rescue buoy. The distressed individual can immediately grab onto the tube, keep their head securely above the water, and catch their breath while remaining completely afloat until boats or ocean rescue teams reach them.

By combining airborne drone agility with instant mechanical flotation, BSO provides an immediate lifeline that prevents swimmers from slipping beneath the surface. This integration of aerial technology stands as a proactive blueprint for coastal communities working to reverse high drowning rates and keep beachgoers safe.
