A 19-year-old FSU frat boy has been accused of randomly killing a married couple and attempting to eat the male victim’s face.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder called the grisly fatal stabbing of Michelle Mishcon Stevens, 53, and John Joseph Stevens III “inexplicable” and “perplexing.
Austin Harrouff, a frat boy teenager with no record who is a rising sophomore currently enrolled at FSU, was arrested and charged with the double homicide.
Snyder said the victims and suspects didn’t know one another and the horrible act of violence appears to be random.
Last night, Harrouff, who wrestled and played football at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, and lived a few miles away with his mother. He was in town to visit his parents and some of his fraternity brothers.
At 8:30 p.m., Snyder said, Harouff went out to dinner with his folks at Duffy’s Sports Bar.
During the meal Harrouff became agitated, possibly because of the slow service, and left.
The Stevens, meanwhile, lived at 19009 Southeast Kokomo Lane and usually spent their evening sitting in the garage of their 3-bedroom, 2-bath stucco house. Snyder said they were doing just that, with the garage door wide open, last night when Harrouff came to their house.
Snyder said the attack — as bad a case as an experienced investigator has ever seen– happened in the garage with a switchblade knife and a multiple of “weapons of opportunity.”
Snyder said it was clear that the male victim had fought back.
“There was an enormous amount of violence inside that garage,” Snyder said and added that the suspect was known to carry a switchblade.
In addition to the Stevens, a good samaritan neighbor, Jeff Fisher, was seriously injured in the attack when responded to screams he heard coming from the garage.
When deputies arrived on scene they found Harrouff atop John Stevens, biting off pieces of his face and growling like an animal.
It took several deputies, a K-9 and a taser to contain Harrouff who was “abnormally strong” according to Snyder.
Initial drug tests came up negative for cocaine, methamphetamines, marijuana and opiates. Snyder said investigators will also be testing for flakka and bath salts.
