F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue Celebrates ASPCA Help A Horse Day

Horse Rescue

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue & Sanctuary will be celebrating the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) national Help A Horse Day, April 23-24,  and competing for a chance to win grant prizes to assist with their efforts to protect horses. In honor of the ASPCA’s 150th Anniversary celebration this year, the contest has been expanded to include a total of $100,000 in grant prizes, including a grand prize of $25,000.

This nationwide competition is for equine rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses in their community who have often been abused or neglected.

To celebrate the day in South Florida, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue will hold an Open House on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24, from 3:00-6:00 pm at their facility located at 19801 Sheridan Street, Southwest Ranches, Florida.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is Broward County’s oldest and largest horse rescue non-profit 501(c)3 organization that has been saving horses for more than 28 years.   They are  one of hundreds of equine rescue groups across the country participating in this national event in the hopes of winning the grant money that they so desperately need.

Horses have been central to the ASPCA’s work since its founding 150 years ago, when Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for the mistreatment of a horse on April 26, 1866.

“The ASPCA contest is a wonderful opportunity for our organization to welcome the residents and businesses of Broward County into our barn and to ask them to help spread awareness about the at-risk horses in our community who are in need of our care,” said Robert Barwick, Executive Director of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue.

“Horses are majestic, loving animals, and we hope our local neighbors will come out to help us win a $25,000 grant so we can continue our lifesaving efforts for years to come,” he added.

Horse RescueAs part of Help A Horse Day, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has also sponsored the “Kids Corner” at the Festival of Americas at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds of Davie on April 23, 2016 from noon to 11:30 pm.

“South Florida is a  very diverse community so, sponsoring Kids Corner is an awesome way to reach people of all cultures,” said Debra Beye-Barwick, Director.

“This event will have participants from North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. There will be music, traditional food and fun for everyone.”
