“Overconsumption” of cinnamon could interfere with some medications, a recent study suggests.

Published in Food Chemistry: Molecular Sciences, the study cited a lack of scientific data on cinnamon’s effects on human metabolism and questions about how the spice interacts with medications. The study did not specify what amount equates to overconsumption but noted that while limited consumption could have health benefits, prolonged use might raise the risk of drug interactions.

There has been a recent “upsurge in cinnamon’s popularity,” the researchers write, due in part to studies showing its potential use in patients with Type 2 diabetes and other conditions. One 2024 forecast found the global cinnamon market is poised to grow by $412.9 million between 2024 and 2028, growth attributed in part to cinnamon’s growing use in pharmaceuticals.
