WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed legislation on Wednesday compelling the U.S. Justice Department to release files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The move concludes a months-long standoff between Congress and the White House over transparency in one of the nation’s most controversial criminal investigations.

The legislation, overwhelmingly approved by the House of Representatives in a 427-1 vote, and then passed by the Senate via unanimous consent, requires the disclosure of unclassified investigative materials — including communications, memos, travel logs, and documented ties to Epstein’s network — within 30 days of enactment, with limited redactions permitted for victim identity protection and active investigations.

Trump had initially opposed the effort, labeling the push “a Democrat hoax” and warning it would distract from the Republican agenda.  However, with bipartisan support overwhelming the effort and a discharge petition forcing a House floor vote, the administration relented. “We have nothing to hide,” the president proclaimed on a Truth Social statement after signing.

While the law marks a major step toward transparency, legal experts caution that significant portions of documents may remain sealed under grand jury and national-security exemptions.  Survivors of Epstein’s abuses and victim-advocacy groups hailed the signing as long overdue, anticipating that the records may finally shed light on Epstein’s associates and government decision-making behind his case.

With the statute now law, all eyes will turn to how fully the files are released and whether they move beyond the “known knowns” to reveal new information.
