In 1904 A 23-Year-Old Apprentice Pharmacist Invented The Banana Split

banana split day

National Banana Split Day is observed annually on August 25th!

Traditionally served in a long dish, called a boat, a banana is cut in half lengthwise and laid in the dish with scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream placed in between.  The strawberry ice cream is complemented with pineapple topping. Chocolate syrup is poured on the vanilla ice cream and strawberry topping covers the chocolate ice cream.  Crushed nuts, whipped cream and maraschino cherries garnish the entire boat.

Today, there are many variations to the classic banana split.

A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel’s Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania created the first banana split in 1904.  David Evans Strickler enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store’s soda fountain.  His first “banana-based triple ice cream sundae” sold for 10 cents, double the cost of all the other sundaes.

Faith Based Events

In Strickler’s hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, they proudly celebrate his creation with a festival annually in August. In 2013, an official marker was placed at the site of the pharmacy where Strickler first made his famous banana split.  The United States Post Office honored the banana split and the town of Latrobe in 2016 with a 47-cent “forever stamp depicting the banana split.  It was one of five stamps in the “Soda Fountain Favorites” series.  For a time, Latrobe residents could receive a cancellation mark memorializing their claim to fame.

A banana split is an ice cream-based dessert. In its classic form it is served in a long dish called a boat. A banana is cut in half lengthwise and laid in the dish. There are many variations, but the classic banana split is made with scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream served in a row between the split banana. In no particular order, pineapple, strawberry and chocolate sauces are spooned over the strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla ice cream. It is garnished with crushed nuts, whipped cream, and maraschino cherry.

  • Walgreen’s drug stores, operated by Charles Rudolph Walgreens is often credited with spreading the banana split’s popularity to a national level. The store had promoted the banana split as their signature dessert, which attracted customers who might have otherwise been simply satisfied with having their prescriptions filled at other drug stores in the neighborhood.
