World Class Entertainment Takes to the Seas

Carnival Cruise Ship

By Terri Lynn, SouthFloridaReporter.com, Managing Editor, Dec, 9, 2015 – Back in the day, a cruise was either a means of transport or a way to unwind and take in the sea air. Passengers “dressed” for dinner and followed a pretty mundane daily routine.

Over the years the cruise culture has changed dramatically and that’s great news for travelers. All of the major cruise lines are now offering more dining choices and have amped up the level of entertainment to a caliber never before seen on the high seas.

Princess Cruises Reunites “The Love Boat” Cast to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Much of the credit for the increase in cruise popularity should go to Princess Cruises for introducing the cruise line – and cruise vacations – to millions of people around the world via the celebrated TV show, “The Love Boat.”

Last week The Love Boat cast reunited aboard Pacific Princess in the Port of Los Angeles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Princess Cruises. The County of Los Angeles and the City of Santa Clarita, the hometown of Princess Cruises world headquarters, also marked the occasion by proclamation declaring December 3,  “Princess Cruises Day.”

The pilot episode of “The Love Boat” was shot aboard the 730-passenger Sun Princess, with Pacific Princess and Island Princess then becoming the primary floating stars of the show. Later episodes and specials were filmed aboard many other Princess cruise ships in destinations around the globe.

The show, which aired from 1977 to 1986, went on to become one of the highest-rated and longest-running and beloved shows on television, introducing viewers to modern day cruising and, in the process, making Princess Cruises and its ships synonymous with vacations at sea.

“People always ask us why ‘The Love Boat’ was so popular and I always say it’s because it gave people something to dream about,” said Gavin MacLeod. “They could dream about being out on the open seas on a cruise and discovering the world’s greatest destinations, dreaming about love and of course happy endings since the shows always ended on a high note. I’m proud to have played a role in the growth of the cruise industry – to see where these ships have come from the days we filmed aboard the original Pacific Princess to now experiencing the 18 magnificent ships in the fleet.”

Princess Cruises has been celebrating its 50th anniversary all year long with an incredible lineup of new dining, shopping and entertainment aboard its ships. The festivities will continue through April 2016.

Carnival Cruise Line has expanded its popular Carnival LIVE entertainment concept to include two hilarious performances by two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin in February 2016.

Performances are held in the ships’ main theaters and will focus her distinctive brand of pull-no-punches comedy with two shows while ships are docked in Cozumel – one aboard Carnival Fantasy February 24 and another aboard Carnival Breeze February 25.

“Kathy Griffin’s unique brand of humor has attracted legions of loyal fans and we’re delighted to kick off our first-ever Carnival LIVE comedy performances with two shows by this accomplished comedian, actress and author,” said Sarah Beth Reno, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line.

“I’m very excited to be part of Carnival LIVE and bring my standup to the high seas,” Griffin said. “I encourage everyone to bring an open mind, a galley full of laughter and your comedy life vests…oh, and leave your kids in the stateroom because the ‘Fantasy’ and the ‘Breeze’ won’t know what hit ’em when I take the stage.”

Tickets for Kathy Griffin’s 2016 Carnival LIVE performances are $50 for general admission, significantly less than land-based venues. VIP tickets are available for $200 and offer seating in the first four rows, a photo opportunity with Griffin and a commemorative concert pass.

A full listing of the 2016 Carnival LIVE concert series is available by visiting www.carnival.com/CarnivalLIVE. Additional information and reservations for Carnival’s cruises are available by contacting any travel agent, calling 1-800-CARNIVAL or visiting carnival.com.
