By Miriam Kramer, Mashable, SouthFloridaReporter.com, Aug 26, 2015 – NASA is going to crash a plane Wednesday, and you can watch it live online. Seriously.
The space agency is planning to drop a Cessna 172 from about 100 feet off the ground in order to simulate a “severe but survivable plane accident,” allowing scientists and engineers to test out emergency locator transmitters (ELTs), NASA said.
You can watch live coverage of the test starting at 1 p.m. ET on NASA TV directly, or through the window below. The test will take place at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia.
“ELTs have to work in the extreme circumstances involved in an airplane crash,” NASA said in a statement. “Included in those extreme circumstances are the possibilities of excessive vibration, fire and impact damage.”
