PUERTO RICO—The United States has moved a significant contingent of special operations aircraft and cargo planes carrying additional troops and equipment into the Caribbean this week. This deployment marks a sharp escalation in the military footprint near Venezuela as the Trump administration intensifies its campaign to unseat President Nicolás Maduro.

According to military officials and flight-tracking data, at least 10 CV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft arrived in the region on Monday night, flying from Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico. The Ospreys, which are frequently used by special-operations forces for high-risk infiltration and extraction missions, were accompanied by C-17 Globemaster III transport planes originating from Army bases at Fort Stewart and Fort Campbell. These bases are home to elite units, including the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

The arrival of these specialized assets provides the Pentagon with “pre-positioning forces in order to act,” according to David Deptula, a retired Air Force lieutenant general, who talked with The Wall Street Journal. He noted that the specific nature of these assets suggests that the administration has already moved toward a decisive course of action.

The buildup coincides with a “total and complete blockade” of Venezuelan oil tankers announced by President Trump last week. The administration has also signaled that military operations could soon expand from the sea to the land. On Monday, Trump told reporters that the U.S. has assembled a “massive armada,” described as the largest ever seen in South America.

Faith Based Events

While U.S. Southern Command characterized the movements as “standard practice” to routinely rotate personnel, the influx of stealthy, precision-strike-capable aircraft indicates a shift toward preparation for potential combat operations. Military analysts suggest these forces are optimized to disable Venezuelan defenses or conduct targeted strikes with minimal risk to U.S. personnel.

The Venezuelan government has condemned the moves as “international piracy.” Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino stated that the country’s military is prepared to defend its territory, asserting that the American buildup would not intimidate the Maduro regime.
