U Of M Names New Board Of Trustees

 At The University of Miami Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, May 16, , the gavel was passed to Richard D. Fain, who began his two-year term as its new Chair. A leader in the global cruise line industry, Fain has served as Vice Chair since 2014, and Chaired the search committee that named the new University of Miami President last year.

The Board re-elected Hilarie Bass as Vice Chair, and elected H.T. Smith as Vice Chair. Additionally, Noor Joudi was elected as Student Trustee. The Board of Trustees is responsible for governing the University of Miami, one of the top private research universities in the United States.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., Fain has served as a UM Trustee since 1997, and currently serves on the Executive Committee and Chairs the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Visiting Committee.

Royal Caribbean’s partnership with the UM Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science fully funds the scientific research program on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas cruise ship, the first ever cruise ship outfitted with ocean and atmospheric science laboratories. He has also generously donated to the RSMAS Scientific Dive Center and the UM Hillel building campaign fund.

A co-chair of the United Way Campaign, he is a member of the National Conference for Community and Justice and serves on the World Wildlife Fund’s National Council, the Posse Foundation and the Florida Council of 100. Among his distinguished awards and honors are winning the Ultimate CEO Award from the South Florida Business Journal, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition Organization, and the French Legion of Honor.

Faith Based Events

Outgoing UM Board Chair Stuart Miller, J.D. ’82, has served as a Trustee since 2002 and was appointed Chair in 2014. Miller is a legacy Trustee who followed in his family’s footsteps, which are deeply rooted at the University. His late father, Leonard M. Miller, served as Chair of UM’s Board from 1995-99, and was active on the Board until his death in 2002.
