Toyota Recalls 600,000+ Camry Sedans Over Instrument Cluster Failures
Toyota has announced a major global safety recall affecting approximately 655,000 Camry sedans from the 2025 and 2026 model years, including roughly 508,000 vehicles in the United States and over 11,000 in Canada. The campaign specifically targets a software vulnerability within the vehicle’s 7-inch digital instrument cluster—commonly referred to as the combination meter—which comes standard on the LE, SE, and Nightshade trim levels.
According to filings submitted to automotive safety regulators, the defect causes the main instrument screen to remain completely blank or turn dark when the driver powers on the vehicle. When the display fails to initialize properly, crucial driving data such as vehicle speed, engine diagnostics, fuel levels, and warning symbols become entirely invisible to the operator.
More concerning for road safety, the digital cluster glitch also deactivates several vital active safety features. When the main display screen goes dark, the vehicle’s turn signals, hazard warning lamps, and auditory chimes—including seat belt reminders, door-ajar alerts, and key-in-ignition warnings—fail to function as intended. Because key visual indicators and audible safety alerts are rendered completely inoperable, the affected sedans fall out of compliance with strict federal motor vehicle safety standards, creating an elevated risk of a crash.
The recall specifically targets models equipped with the standard 7-inch screen setup. Higher-tier Camry trims, such as the XLE and XSE, feature a larger 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that operates on a separate software architecture, leaving those variants completely unaffected. Additionally, Toyota confirmed that it has not received any reports of accidents, injuries, or fatalities tied to this condition.
To rectify the defect, authorized Toyota dealerships will inspect the vehicle and perform a free software update on the combination meter. If the software reprogramming fails to resolve the issue, technicians will replace the combination meter hardware entirely at no charge. Because the update cannot be deployed through over-the-air (OTA) wireless transmissions, owners will need to schedule a service appointment at a local dealership.
Toyota plans to begin issuing official notification letters to registered owners by early October 2026. In the meantime, Camry owners can verify whether their vehicle is impacted by visiting Toyota’s official recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) database and entering their 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
