There Are 4 Types of Couples. Which One Are You?

By , Cosmopolitan, SouthFloridaReporter.com, – Get ready to feel either smug or nervous: new research shows there’s one type of couple that is way more likely to stay together than three other types of couples, the Independent reports.

Researcher Brian Ogolsky of the University of Illinois looked at the relationships of 376 unmarried couples in their mid-20s and focused on the couple as a unit, instead of what many researchers have typically done, which is focus on individual components of the relationship. The research followed the couples’ interest in getting married over a period of nine months, which of course varied due to current fights the couple were having or certain personal differences.

Overall, Ogolsky says the four types of relationships people he saw boiled down to: dramatic, conflict-ridden, socially involved, and partner-focused.

The dramatic couples (couples who spent less time together, and had a lot of ups and downs) made up the largest percentage of the people he saw, at 34 percent. Partner-focused couples (couples who valued their partner above all else and who spent a varied amount of time together) came in at a close second, making up 30 percent of the group. Socially involved couples (couples who were constantly interacting with each other on social media) made up 19 percent of couples, and conflict-ridden couples (couples who fought the most, but had a more stable relationship than the dramatic couples), made up the remaining 12 percent.

By the end of the nine months, they found that the dramatic couples were most likely to break up, couples who were interacting on social media a lot didn’t really vary in their interest in getting married over time, regular drops in commitment levels were seen in the conflict-ridden couples, and the partner-focused people were thought to have the highest chance of having a lasting married relationship.

This of course makes sense since the constant ups and downs and lack of stability would usually lead to only one end point for the dramatic couples. But if you put your partner before anything else in your life, that’s bound to be a healthier situation than if you’re working all the time or seeing your friends more than seeing them.

So congrats, partner-focused couples, you’re doing it right.
