The First-Ever Image Uploaded On Instagram Was A Photo Of A Golden Retriever, According To TIME

Get ready to celebrate a furry friend, because National Golden Retriever Day is every February 3! The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the US, and for good reason. Their calm temperament, intelligence, and playfulness make them ideal best friends for any dog lover. Plus, they make great disability assistance animals, like seeing-eye dogs for the blind and hearing dogs for the deaf.

They’ve ended up saving lives in these roles—no wonder they have a holiday named after them. Read more and you might just have to go out and adopt a Golden yourself!

  • 1868 – Scotland gets the credit for first breeding this amazing dog. They were bred as hunting dogs.  
  • 1938 – This Golden Retriever Club was founded to “promote the temperament, appearance, soundness, natural retrieving, and hunting abilities of the Golden Retriever.”
  • 1975 – Given to Gerald Ford by his daughter, Susan, Liberty spent her early years at the White House and Camp David. Liberty even gave birth to a litter of puppies while she was living in the White House in 1975, one of which the president kept.
  • 1997 – Remember the movie (Video) Air Bud from 1997? The star of the show was a Golden Retriever! These dogs are so easy to train; they can star in shows because they’re that good at following their human pals. 
  • 2001 – Bretagne (pronounced Brit-nee) is one of the most famous of these dogs that was certified by FEMA. Two years old at the time of the disaster, she worked with her owner for 10 days at the site of 9/11 with the aim of rescue and recovery. When she died in 2016 (at almost 17 years old!), Bretagne was honored by firefighters and rescue workers as she was laid to rest in her Texas hometown
  • 2012 – A Golden Retriever owner named Kristen realized that no day existed to celebrate the breed. Thus, she created National Golden Retriever Day on her dog’s birthday.
  • 2012 – In October 2012, Charlie the Golden Retriever (Video) clocked in the loudest bark in Australia, Adelaide. It was measured at 113.1 decibels, replacing the previous 2009 record by Daz, a London-based German Shepherd who clocked in at 108 decibels.  
  • 2019 – An estimated 1,000 Golden Retrievers showed up to an event appropriately hosted by the City of Golden and Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies. The celebration keeps getting bigger and better!
  • 2020 –In February 2020, a Retriever named Daniel won the Sporting Group at the 144th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. 
    • He also won the Canine Good Citizen, the American Kennel Club’s gold standard for dog obedience and good manners. Earning this means your furry pal is a pro at dealing with distractions, accepting friendly strangers, and behaving politely around other dogs.   
  • They are best suited to a life where someone is home during the day, and this way, you can both get some great exercise.
  • They have two layers of fur – The inner layer is to stay warm, and the outer layer is to keep water off.
  • Similar to many humans, Golden Retrievers are born with light-colored hair that darkens as they age.
  • Golden Retrievers make some of the best therapy dogs.
  • Recognized by the American Kennel Club in the United States, the Golden Retriever is also a popular choice as a disability assistance dog, including the important task of working as a guide dogs for the blind and hearing dogs for the deaf.
