We’re still watching Tropical Storm Melissa as it accelerates away from the North American coast. At 5 am Monday, Melissa was located near 40.7 North, 54.0 West, and was moving east-northeast at 20 miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds were 40 miles per hour. Melissa is forecast to dissipate in a day or so, leading to a gradual weakening of the swells and coastal flooding it has been generating from Florida northward to the Maritime Provinces of Canada.
Elsewhere, we’re watching a low off the Central American coast which has a low chance of developing but will bring heavy rains to the region. Also, the wave just off the African coast has a high chance of developing into a depression, and this feature will bring windy conditions and heavy rain to the Cape Verde Islands late Monday into Tuesday. After that, this system will encounter hostile conditions that will limit further development. Finally, a wave in the central Atlantic has a low chance of developing into a depression before it reaches the Windward Islands (and hostile conditions) in a few days.
