Summer Rains Return And 2017 Hurricane Season Begins (Video)

summer rainsSummer rains are back in South Florida on Thursday, the first day of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. While there’s nothing organized, some tropical moisture will move in and linger for the weekend and beyond. Thursday features a warm start with a few showers in spots. Then look for a mix of sun and clouds, followed by afternoon storms. Highs on Thursday will be mostly in the upper 80s, with warmer readings at some inland locations.

summer rainsFriday will bring plenty of clouds, and showers and storms will be around. Highs on Friday will be in the upper 80s.

Cloudy conditions, passing showers, and some storms will be back on Saturday. Saturday’s highs will be in the upper 80s.

The pattern continues on Sunday, with cloudy skies, showers, and some storms. Sunday’s highs will be in the upper 80s.

Look for another cloudy and wet day on Monday, with passing showers and storms. Highs on Monday will be in the upper 80s.

The beginning of the 2017 hurricane season is a good time to take a look at your hurricane plan and restock supplies, before the tropics get busy.

Donna Thomas has studied hurricanes for two decades. She holds a PhD in history when her experience with Hurricane Andrew ultimately led her to earn a degree in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University. Donna spent 15 years at WFOR-TV (CBS4 in Miami-Fort Lauderdale), where she worked as a weather producer with hurricane experts Bryan Norcross and David Bernard. She also produced hurricane specials and weather-related features and news coverage, as well as serving as pool TV producer at the National Hurricane Center during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Donna also served as a researcher on NOAA's Atlantic Hurricane Database Reanalysis Project. Donna specializes in Florida's hurricane history.
