ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Sand artists created a giant “Save Earth” message Sunday highlighting Earth Day weekend activities in the Florida Keys.

Teams of eight-to-10 sculpturists from Florida Keys schools and businesses sponsored and created each of the nine letters on the beach at the Cheeca Lodge resort in Islamorada. Among standouts was the ‘S’ (in Save) represented by a seahorse and the ‘T’ (in Earth) was filled with materials destined for recycling.

Besides the sand art message, organizations such as the Keys-based Turtle Hospital and Mote Marine Laboratory provided environmentally oriented education programs.
