Record-Breaking Heat Dome Threatens the West and Plains

Tens of millions in the Western United States are forecast to experience all-time-record high temperatures this week, as a new heat dome sets up over the Northern Plains States.

AccuWeather expert meteorologists forecast 109°F in Billings, MT this coming Sunday, which would become the highest recorded temperature ever in Montana’s largest city. This would break the previous all-time-record high of 107°F record set in 2002.

It’s one of several cities in the region expecting record heat this week, including Salt Lake City, which is forecast to come within a degree of the city’s all-time-record high.

The most extreme heat will center on an area from Salt Lake City to Boise, across eastern Montana, the Dakotas, and Minnesota through late next week.

Faith Based Events

“This region is going to dry out fast, and fire danger, which is already a concern, will only intensify. At the same time, drought will expand and merge with the already-severe conditions gripping western Nebraska, western Kansas, and northeast Colorado, creating one continuous zone of stress from the Rockies to the Plains,” said AccuWeather Expert Meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

Drought and Wildfire Risk Expands with More Heat, Dry Conditions

A high-risk wildfire development is forecast to continue across the western United States due to increasing heat, ongoing dry conditions and periods of gusty winds where some fires are already burning.

The North American Monsoon is set to bring afternoon and evening thunderstorms to the Four Corners, especially southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, with dry thunderstorms possible farther north and into Utah and Colorado. AccuWeather expert meteorologists warn any of these storms could spark new wildfires via lightning.

Looking Ahead, Heat to Move East
AccuWeather experts forecast this heat down to shift east over the next week, bringing a couple days of dangerous heat and high humidity back to Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States. High temperatures are likely to reach the 90s to near 100 degrees.
