By Mark Young, SouthFloridaReporter.com, Managing Editor, Aug 13, 2015— Did you know that every year close to 35,000 students apply for admission to Harvard University? Less than 6% are accepted.
Yanet Gomez, 18, from Naples, Florida made the cut and is going to this illustrious school on a $100,000 scholarship and plans to study medicine.
Going to college is a costly proposition and a Naples businessman decided he wanted to help Miss Gomez and her family. “I read about this remarkable young lady in the newspaper and invited her to come to my store for a shopping spree,” said Phil Baker, owner of Clothes Mentor Naples.
Baker, a Naples resident, grew up in the Boston area and knows first-hand how brutally cold the winters can be.
On Friday, Yanet and her mother visited Clothes Mentor Naples to pick out clothing to keep her warm, toasty and fashionably chic for the cold and windy days ahead.
“Helping Yanet create a stylish and practical wardrobe was team work. Everyone in the store fell in love with her,” Baker said. “She’s an extraordinary young lady!”
After three hours of non-stop shopping and modeling her clothes for everyone in the store, Yanet had a top notch wardrobe that included sweaters, jackets, dresses, skirts, boots and accessories.
Her mother, Laura Gomez, could not hold back her tears of joy and appreciation. “She’s crying because she is so happy and so thankful for everything that Clothes Mentor Naples has done for me. This is a blessing I never imagined,” said the college bound freshman.
“Yanet leaves for Boston this week and promised to send pictures as soon as she can. We will be thinking of her,” Baker added.
