When two American girls are both married to world leaders and happen to be in London at the same time, of course they meet! Keri Lumm reports.
Meghan Markle may have joined the British royal family, but some American things are just too good to give up—and Michelle Obama certainly makes that list.
Monday night, Obama made a stop in London on her book tour for Becoming, her new memoir. Guests in the audience at The Royal Festival Hall were surely thrilled to see her converse with celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Unbeknownst to them, however, there was another celebrity in the room.
After the Evening Standard broke the news, Kensington Palace confirmed that Meghan Markle secretly attended the event with Obama and Adichie. What’s more, after the public event came to a close, Meghan went backstage to meet with the former First Lady. The Standard‘s source was a friend who went to see Obama with Meghan.
According to this anonymous source, Meghan “had a long private audience with Michelle. They spoke at length about the importance of supporting and empowering women across all cultures and communities. They also talked about shared experiences of pregnancy and raising children, plus shared causes including girls’ education.”
This meeting comes on the heels of Michelle Obama’s interview with Good Housekeeping magazine, in which she explicitly offered advice to the Duchess. “My biggest advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything,” she said. “There’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that,” the former first lady continued, “And I think she can maximize her impact for others, as well as her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally.”
Now that they’ve met, perhaps Meghan was able to receive this advice in person.
