“Uptown Funk,” “Read All About It” and “Work” are three of the songs on America’s cleaning playlist, according to new research.
A survey of 2,000 Americans found that 66 percent listen to music while they clean – with top genres found to be hip-hop/rap (58 percent), blues (51 percent) and rock (47 percent).
Of those, 72 percent have a go-to song to blast while they tidy up their home.
Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of DishFish, makers of multipurpose sponges and non-scratch scrubbers, the survey looked at cleaning in a variety of ways – from the music we listen to, the moods that make us more likely to get through the chores and the difficulties faced.
Results found that 70 percent tidy their home when they’re putting off other things – with the average procrastinator using that trick four times a week.
But that’s not the only reason people clean: The survey found 49 percent are most motivated to clean when they’re happy.
And it might be a cycle – as cleaning was found to have some mood-boosting effects.
The majority of respondents said cleaning gave them a sense of accomplishment (65 percent) and helped them clear their mind (63 percent).
Sixty-three percent also find cleaning to be relaxing – more so than getting fresh air (61 percent) or meditating (57 percent).
The survey showed that 86 percent of respondents do feel on top of their chores, but the last deep clean of their kitchen happened over a week and a half ago (11 days).
And the majority let their dishes pile up between cleanings (69 percent) – with a fifth “always” letting them stack up in the sink – leaving respondents feeling stressed (51 percent) and frustrated (48 percent).
“We know cleaning can be time consuming and stressful, especially when you’d rather spend that time with family,” said Jim Kordenbrock, founder of DishFish. “Instead of letting those dishes pile up because they need to soak or you don’t have time to wash them all, make sure you’re using the right tools to eliminate your soaking and cut down on the time you spend over the sink.”
When it comes to chores, half of respondents actually enjoy cleaning the kitchen – but, more than any other room, it was rated as “very difficult” to clean.
And results found that more people enjoy scrubbing their toilet (77 percent) than washing dishes by hand (67 percent).
Other chores favored over washing dishes by hand include: taking out the garbage (79 percent), cleaning the stove top (78 percent) and cleaning the tub/shower (78 percent).
The worst parts of washing the dishes by hand were found to be scrubbing off caked-on food (44 percent), feeling like the dishes still aren’t clean (42 percent) and the amount of time it takes to clean them (32 percent).
That was followed by using a sponge (31 percent) and scratching delicate dishes (29 percent).
“The right tool when you’re cooking makes all the difference – same goes for cleaning,” said Kordenbrock. “Instead of dreading clean-up duty, make dishwashing less of chore with a powerful, non-scratch scrubber sponge that cuts through grease and grime.”
