
A state of emergency has been declared in Florida ahead of Milton, which is forecast to plow into the western peninsula on Wednesday as a major hurricane, packing wind gusts up to 140 mph and 20 feet of storm surge.
Milton is poised to make landfall along the west-central Florida coast in the Tampa Bay area Wednesday night as a major hurricane.
There’s a tropical storm warning for the Keys. A tropical storm watch is now in effect from Flamingo northward to the Saint Lucie/Indian River county line.
There’s a hurricane watch from the Saint Lucie/Indian River county line northward to the Saint Marys River, the border between Florida and Georgia.
At 5 p.m., extremely dangerous Hurricane Milton had maximum sustained winds of 180 miles per hour. Milton was 675 miles southwest of Tampa and moving east at 10 miles per hour.
Landfall is expected somewhere in the hurricane warning area late Wednesday night or very early Thursday morning.
