GoTopless Day

In the course of a day we receive oodles of press releases and news announcements. (Think Lucy and Ethel on the candy conveyor belt) Our job is to review these releases with a keen eye keeping you, our reader in mind.

Is it important? Should we make you aware? Will you care? These are just some of the questions that cross our mind.

When we took a look at the press release from GoTopless (dot org) we thought it was an amusing tidbit. Further research revealed that this annual event was trending and was on many other news organization’s radar screens.

Rather than pass any judgement we felt compelled to share this with you.

Some readers may thank us others may be offended. We don’t decide the news…we are just sharing it.

Today, August 28, the women’s rights organization “GoTopless” will hold Go Topless Pride Parades and events worldwide for the 9th annual GoTopless Day, according to a press release we received from them.

GoTopless is inviting both men and women to “stand up with topless pride” on August 28 to honor the 96th anniversary of Women’s Equality Day and to support the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment.

GoTopless Day always falls at the Sunday closest to Women’s Equality Day, August 26, the day women earned their right to vote on the basis of Gender Equality. In 1971, the US Congress made August 26 a nationally recognized date and named it “Women’s Equality Day”.

As a matter of fact, The President of the United States typically commemorates this date each year.

“Our goal is for equal gender topless rights to be enforced worldwide, freeing women’s nipples,” said GoTopless spokesperson, Kasyo Perrier who leads GoTopless in NYC. “In New York, police will block off streets to let our GoTopless Pride Parade pass.”

Perrier said New York is the ideal location since it’s already legal for women to go topless there. “It’s liberating and empowering for women to free their bodies from repression. Freeing nipples and bodies frees minds as well, restoring self-image and self-esteem. Therefore, our topless pride parades will overflow with bare breasts, joy and fun. A giant balloon in the shape of a pair of breasts will float in the NYC’s sky.  We’ll conclude at with a speech at the Dag Hammarsjold Plaza about GoTopless and the cultural revolution it is creating.”

“Since 1992, New York has been one of the world’s few cities to legally recognize women’s topless rights,” Perrier said, adding that the past year has helped to further that right elsewhere. “The movie ‘Free The Nipple’ was released, and actresses and performers like Scout Willis, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Iggy Azalea have been baring their nipples publicly in support,” she added.

She said enforcement of equal topless rights is a crucial aspect of gender equality. “Dr. Marcus Wenner explains how banning the female bare chest harms brains of women and girls,” Perrier said.
