Palm Beacher Donald Trump says he plans to nominate campaign donor and Wellington polo boss Duke Buchan III to be the U.S. ambassador to Spain.
Fellow Palm Beacher Buchan, who owns a polo team and a seven-acre horse ranch in Wellington, speaks Spanish and has studied at two Spanish universities, which means he is at least somewhat qualified, a welcome change from the other Palm Beach area appointments.
Furthermore, Buchan actually seems to care about how the U.S. interacts with the Spanish-speaking world and has established a fund at the University of North Carolina to promote the study of Spanish culture and the Spanish language.
Buchan will also be the ambassador to Andorra, a tiny, Catalan-speaking principality between France and Spain. Buchan is said to have a working knowledge of Catalan.
CEO of the West Palm Beach-based Hunter Global Investors, a private investment management firm, Buchan wasn’t an early supporter of Trump’s, so the appointment is somewhat surprising.
