Many of us believe that products and beverages with “diet” as a large part of their name should help you lose weight, right? Then why does all the research prove that they do just the opposite?
A breakthrough study of diet soda drinkers was presented to the American Diabetes Association in 2011. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio followed 474 people for 10 years. The results? Those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had a 500% greater increase in waist size than those who didn’t drink diet soda at all!
What does this mean?
Your waist size is a prime indicator of the build-up of visceral fat around your internal organs that is strongly linked to metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Drinking diet soda to lose weight generates exactly the opposite effect.
A 9-year study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in March, 2015 verified the earlier findings.
Here’s how the numbers played out:
No Diet Soda Average 0.8 inches gained around the waist
Occasional Diet Soda Average 1.83 inches gained around the waist
Daily Diet Soda Average 3.2 inches gained around the waist!
How can this be?
Artificial sweeteners are only good for food producers – not humans. It is a lot cheaper to put a few milligrams of a chemical into their product than it is to put in real food that your body can recognize. Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) and other artificial sweeteners fool your body and in the process, screw up your natural reactions to what you’re eating or drinking.
Why “Diet” Sodas Actually Ruin Your Diet
Your body thinks it is getting sugar, so it releases insulin to keep your blood sugar level from going too high. Instead, this reaction lowers your blood sugar – making you hungry. So, you end up eating more!
Aspartame alone accounts for 75% of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. It has been linked to migraine, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s disease, premature births and memory loss.
“Our body chemistry is a fragile balancing act, and the chemicals in our food supply can speed up the aging processes significantly and help create diseases,” says Sergey Dzugan, MD, PhD., founder of DzLogic and a world-renowned expert in body chemistry optimization and the natural treatment of physiologic diseases.
“The bottom line is there are no magic bullets for staying healthy and fit. Eating real food in moderation, staying active and getting the proper amount of sleep every night have always been the foundations of good health,” Dzugan added.
