Over the years, I had tried to quit smoking, trying out patches, gum, tablets and even cold turkey in my efforts. I always failed. Last year, thanks to some help from my very good friend, Ahmed Nashaat, I was finally able to kick the habit.
If you are about to try and stop smoking then these tips will hopefully give you some additional help.
Snacking
The big concern that many have when they quit smoking is that they are going to put on weight. The reason for this is that to occupy the hands and the mouth, we inevitably reach for the food. In order to avoid putting on weight and to still ensure that your hands and mouth stay busy, it is important that you get used to preparing some snacks for your day the night before.
What you need to prepare are things such as celery sticks, peppers, cucumber, nuts and dried fruits. These are all tough to eat and will keep you busy for longer, they are also much healthier than going for chips or candy.
Buddy Up
I was lucky enough to have Ahmed help me when I quit smoking and I would recommend that you also get a buddy to help you out. The main reason for this is those moments when you are dying for a cigarette, during these times it is very easy to justify to yourself why it is a good idea, so it is great to have a friend to talk to, who will remind you why you are doing this.
Exercise
The sooner that you can get into an exercise routine the better, this will not only keep you healthy and fit but it will also discourage you from smoking. Once you have done something good to your body such as exercise, there is far less temptation to then do something harmful to your body such as smoking.
Pictures
The diseases which can be caused as a result of smoking are gruesome and it helped me a lot to remind myself of this each day. I took some photos on my phone from medical websites which showed the organs and the diseases which smoking caused.
Whenever I wanted to light up I would look at these images and instantly I would be too disgusted to reach for the cigarettes.
The truth is that the consequences of smoking are terrible and anything that you can do to dissuade yourself of this is going to be very helpful when you are trying to get over the hurdle of the first few months.
Go ahead, you can do it!
