Atlantic Hurricane Season Reaches Historical Peak Without a Single Hurricane

The Atlantic hurricane season will reach its historical peak of the season this week without producing a single hurricane. An unusually strong El Niño has helped suppress development across the basin, putting 2026 on track to set a new satellite-era record for the latest first hurricane of the season.

The climatological peak of Atlantic activity is this Thursday, Sept. 10. The latest first hurricane during the satellite era formed on Sept. 11 in both 2002 and 2013. If no hurricane develops by the end of Friday, the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane season will surpass that record.

“Strong El Niño events typically suppress Atlantic hurricane activity, but reaching the peak of the season without a hurricane is still extraordinary,” said AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva. “Even the comparable Super El Niño seasons of 1982, 1997 and 2015 produced their first hurricanes much earlier than this.”

What the Season Has Brought So Far

Five named storms have formed in the Atlantic this season, but none have reached hurricane strength. An unusually strong El Niño, persistent wind shear and repeated plumes of dry, Saharan air have made it difficult for tropical systems to organize and intensify.

“This less conducive environment is expected to persist through the remainder of the hurricane season,” DaSilva added. “This can cause the hurricane season to be less active overall.”

Only two seasons in the full historical record, 1907 and 1914, ended without a hurricane. Two other seasons, 1905 and 1925, produced only one. No season during the satellite era has recorded fewer than two hurricanes, a mark set in 1982 and 2013.

Unusual Even for a Super El Niño Season

The closest El Niño comparisons are the Super El Niño seasons of 1982, 1997 and 2015. All three produced their first hurricane much earlier in the season.

Hurricane Bill formed July 12, 1997
Hurricane Danny formed Aug. 20, 2015

Those seasons ultimately produced two, three and four hurricanes, respectively.

Despite the record-slow start, hurricane season continues through Nov. 30, leaving plenty of time for Atlantic activity to increase. In 2022, no named storms formed in August, but six formed in September and four became hurricanes.

AccuWeather Experts Monitoring Waters Near the Southeast Coast and in the Eastern Gulf

AccuWeather hurricane experts are also monitoring an area off the Southeast coast and eastern Gulf for possible tropical development through the middle of September. Regardless of development, thunderstorms could bring flooding downpours and locally gusty winds.
