The dangerous heat dome bringing 100-degree temperatures to parts of the Eastern United States will continue to present extended risks to millions, including after the sun sets.
- EWR (Newark Liberty International Airport) set its all-time warmest night in recorded history, only dropping to 87 degrees overnight Thursday. The previous record was 86, set back in 2011.
- Washington, D.C and New York City both tied its all-time record warmest night Thursday at 84, last set in 2011
- Philadelphia and Boston were just one degree shy of its all-time warmest overnight, with the temperature only dropping to 82 degrees Thursday. The all-time record for both cities is 83, set in 2011 in Philadelphia and twice set in Boston in 2019 and 1975.
- AccuWeather experts say Philadelphia is forecast to only drop to 83 degrees overnight Friday (tonight), which could tie the all-time record if it occurs

AccuWeather expert meteorologists say there is a relationship between repeated extreme daytime heat and overnight temperatures.
“The atmosphere isn’t able to recover at night. It’s retaining more heat, especially in urban areas where an abundance of pavement holds in the heat,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva. “Dark colored surfaces such as pavement are a lot more efficient at retaining heat compared to grassy surfaces. With warmer nights, the daytime temperature rise can have a higher launching pad allowing the next day to be hot as well, especially when we’re dealing with these big heat wave events.”
The extreme heat, forecast 10-20 degrees above historic averages, will remain the biggest threat for many, but it is just one part of the Independence Day weekend. Severe thunderstorms, and elevated wildfire danger are expected to create significant weather-related risks across much of the United States.
July 4 Holiday weekend: Other Threats AccuWeather Experts are Tracking
- “Ring of Fire” storms associated with heat dome are forecast from Colorado and New Mexico, eastward to Florida and along the Atlantic Seaboard, creating the potential for flight delays, highway slowdowns, dangerous lightning, and localized flooding
- Potential for organized clusters of severe thunderstorms across parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, where damaging winds could lead to downed trees, power outages, and travel disruptions
- Dry conditions in the southwestern remain a threat for wildfires, where many already burn in and around Utah
