How to Build a Dog Kennel

kennel

If you own a dog then having a kennel outside can be incredibly useful as this provides the dog with its own space. You could simply buy a kennel but it can be much cheaper and more rewarding to build one. Here is all that you need to know about building a kennel for your dog.

Tools

There are a few different tools that you will need for the job and places like SGS will be the best place to find them. The main tools include:

  • Grinder
  • Shovel
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Circular saw
  • Tape measure
  • Pliers
  • Hacksaw

Materials

Faith Based Events

The main materials for building a kennel for your dog are:

  • Chain link fencing and gate
  • Sand
  • Pea gravel
  • Landscape fabric
  • Sunscreen
  • Concrete

Walls & Doors

Chain link fencing which is at least 4 foot tall (taller for larger dogs) is ideal for building a kennel because it is safe, secure and easy to assemble. You will need to make sure that you create a large enough size so that the dog can comfortably move around and bury the fence by around a foot if the dog is a digger.

Flooring

A large grassy area is ideal for a kennel but this is not always possible. Concrete can damage a dog’s paws so pea gravel or large flat stones are a good alternative for the flooring. There should be a sand base for drainage first which should be around 6 inches if you are building on clay.

Doghouse/Shade

The dog will need protection from the elements so having a doghouse to rest in or shade is important. These doghouses can be relatively easy to build yourself or you could look to buy one. Make sure that it is placed away from the corner of the kennel as otherwise it could be used to escape. A landscape fabric roof on the outside section can also provide shade for the dog during hot summer days.

A kennel is a great addition to the home for dog owners because it gives the dog its own space while allowing you to keep the dog happy, safe and secure at all times. Building your own dog kennel can actually be a relatively straightforward job but you must always plan carefully to make sure that they space is secure and comfortable.
