Timing is everything, they say, and Thursday brought the news that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg could be set to face personal sanctions from U.S. authorities for his company’s privacy and data breaches, just as the company admitted that an Instagram password breach had impacted millions of its users.
Facebook’s torrid Thursday was not helped by the implication that they buried the Instagram news, updating an old blog post rather than issuing a new release. Not only did Facebook elect to update an existing post to break the news, but they also did so just as the news wires filled with William Barr’s press conference on Robert Mueller’s report.
If this was a plan, it didn’t work.
“I started Facebook, I run it, and I’m responsible for what happens here,” Zuckerberg told a U.S. Senate hearing a year ago. “So, now, we have to go through all of our relationships with people and make sure that we’re taking a broad enough view of our responsibility.”
That may be truer than Zuckerberg realized. Overnight, the Washington Post reported that “federal regulators investigating Facebook for mishandling its users’ personal information have set their sights on the company’s chief executive, exploring his past statements on privacy and weighing whether to seek new, heightened oversight of his leadership.”
