Trump Leaves Door Ajar for Unprecedented Third Term Push

In recent months, President Donald J. Trump has refused to definitively rule out a bid for a third presidential term, saying, “There are methods that you could do it.”  His comments come even though the Twenty-second Amendment explicitly prohibits anyone from being elected more than twice.

While he has also said he’ll “probably not” run again, his campaign-style merchandise and surging speculation from allies suggest a careful trial balloon rather than a simple rhetorical flourish.  Legal experts decry any realistic path for a third term as “implausible,” pointing out that efforts to repeal or rewrite the amendment would face extraordinary political hurdles.

Public sentiment echoes that skepticism: a recent survey found half of voters think Trump will try again in 2028, but 69 % believe he shouldn’t. Whether this is a power play to reinvigorate his base or a serious campaign strategy remains unclear — but one thing is certain: Trump’s lingering “maybe” is forcing Washington to reckon with uncharted constitutional questions and the possibility of a presidency unlike any before.
