For over a century, the basic zipper design has remained largely unchanged: interlocking teeth flanked by fabric tape. However, YKK, the Japanese company responsible for producing nearly half of the world’s zippers, has introduced AiryString—a groundbreaking redesign that eliminates the traditional fabric tape.

The AiryString zipper is lighter, more flexible, and integrates seamlessly into garments, offering a sleeker profile compared to its predecessors. This innovation emerged from a collaboration between YKK and JUKI Corporation, initiated in 2017. The partnership aimed to create a zipper that better aligns with modern, high-performance fabrics.

Early adopters like The North Face have incorporated AiryString into their Summit Series Advanced Mountain Kit, while eco-conscious brands such as Earthletica have praised its softness and near-silent operation.

Beyond its design benefits, AiryString offers significant environmental advantages. By removing the fabric tape, YKK reduces material waste, water usage, and CO₂ emissions. The company also provides a 100% recycled-material version of the zipper, further minimizing its ecological footprint.

Faith Based Events

While the adoption of AiryString may require specialized sewing equipment, its potential to revolutionize the apparel industry is evident. YKK’s commitment to continuous innovation reflects its founding philosophy: “Little parts. Big difference.”
