Prince Andrew announced that he will no longer use his title of Duke of York or the honours of Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order and Royal Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter.
In a statement released via the Royal Family’s official site, Andrew said the decision was made “in discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family,” noting that continued accusations against him “distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.” He reiterated his denial of all allegations.
The timing of his announcement coincides with the forthcoming release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre, whose posthumous book contains renewed allegations that Andrew sexually abused her when she was a minor while associated with Jeffrey Epstein.
Though Andrew will no longer use those titles, the dukedom itself cannot be removed without Parliamentary action. He will retain the title of prince by birth.
Over the past years, Andrew has already stepped back from public duties (in 2019) and was stripped of his military links and royal patronages in 2022 amid backlash over his association with Epstein and legal settlements. His renunciation marks a further retreat from royal life, though debates are already emerging on whether Parliament might more formally disempower his remaining titles.
