The European Space Agency (ESA) has unveiled a movie that shows Mawrth Vallis on Mars. The stunning video was made by stitching the images together captured by ESA’s Mars Express.
Mawrth Vallis is one of the largest valley on Mars measuring 600 km-long, 2 km-deep outflow channel at the boundary of the southern highlands and the northern lowlands of Red Planet.
The astonishing movie starts its journey at the mouth of the channel in Chryse Planitia, and heads towards the apparent source region in the Arabia Terra highlands. One can see different types of impact craters on the plateau formed over a course of 4 billion years.
One can easily see patches of light and dark deposits after zooming in. According to scientists, the light-toned layered sediments are among the largest outcrops of clay minerals – phyllosilicates – on Mars. Their presence indicates the presence of liquid water in the past.
