3 Steps to Snowbirding in Florida

Every year, thousands of snowbirds converge on Florida, enjoying sunny days on the beaches and golf courses.  It’s only natural that Florida would hold a certain charm as a snowbird paradise. After all, the beautiful climate and many attractions make it the ideal state in which to over-winter.

These are just some of the reasons why retirees choose to head south in winter. But how do you make the shift? What are you supposed to consider?

Types of Snowbird Housing in Florida

When it comes to finding retirement housing, you will find plenty of different options. Obviously, your budget and needs will determine which you choose. One of the first things to consider is renting vs. buying. Alternatively, you could rent an apartment, single-family home, condo or manufactured home from a private owner or agency. Be sure to book long in advance, as they fill up fast in the months leading up to winter.

If you enjoy the freedom of visiting a different part of this great state every year, timeshare is a good option, or even better: RV parks. Owning an RV opens you up to amazing opportunities, and you have much more freedom from booking hotel reservations months in advance. You also have the convenience of enjoying the home-away-from-home comforts.

Preparing Your Home for Your Absence

When you’re away from your home during winter, it is important to prepare it for your absence. Turning off the water can help to prevent freezing pipes, as can keeping the heat just high enough. You could hire a snow-removal company to maintain your property while you’re away, and you could have solar-powered lights installed around the outside of the property. Also, ask a neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your home.

Travel Options for Snowbirds in Florida

Don’t want to travel for days to reach Florida in your RV or car? No problem. You could always fly down and have your car and or RV shipped to your destination. That means you get there quicker, and you have access to your own vehicle for the duration of your stay. At the end of winter, simply ship it back up north.

Having your own car shipped can save you a lot of money on car rental costs. There’s no better way to relax and enjoy your retirement. However, proper planning of your Miami, FL car shipping ensures the success of your new snowbirding lifestyle.
