Many people hate mornings for waking up early and that discouraging feeling of being “late” and “behind”. Not only is this type of morning routine reactive and unhealthy, but also it programs you for failure. Instead, creating the right morning routine that consists of meaningful proactive habits is able to set you up for success.
Hal Elrod in his book The Miracle Morning explains how habit stacking (creating a sequence of habits and making it a habit itself) helps create a morning plan that saves you from wasting precious energy and willpower on unnecessary small decisions.
You can create your morning routine of whatever is meaningful to you. We (inspired by Hal Elrod and other lifestyle coaches) recommend adding some of the below-mentioned ideas to it. The good news is that even if you’ve never been an early bird, morning can become your time of peak productivity. However, it is possible only if you decide to make room for more and… wake up earlier.
Ideas for your perfect morning routine
1. Drink water
Your whole body and especially your brain need pure water to wake up and boost your metabolism.
2. Stretch a bit
Don’t try to squeeze an hour-long workout into your morning routine. The point is just to limber up by doing simple stretching exercises for 5-10 minutes. Mobile apps work just great for this purpose.
3. Document goals and thanks
Writing helps concentrate on important things and keep you mindful of your track. Write down your long-term goals and 2-3 targets for this particular day. Build your own blog and share your vision with the world or make a habit of listing 2-3 things you are grateful for.
4. Read for 20 minutes
Morning is the best time to read a book because if you postpone it to later hours, you either won’t get back to it at all or get lost in a book (Goodbye, other tasks!). Inspirational books on personal growth set you up for the day and leave you food for thought you can enjoy digesting.
5. Don’t choose
Have you ever wondered why successful people wear the same type of clothes every day? Their brains have to solve so many complex issues daily so if they can remove a couple of small and unimportant decisions like what to eat for breakfast or what clothes to put on from their schedules, it is wise to do so. A predictable beginning of your day makes you feel pro-active and in control.
6. Pray/meditate
Spending some time in silence, listening to your inner self, and tuning in to the Supreme Being (whatever you call it) helps you understand what the most important things in your life (and this very day) are as well as improve your focus and reduce stress levels.
7. Do your most important task first
This is the point where your morning smoothly flows into your working day. Enjoyable or not, your most important task must be put first in your schedule to ensure you get it done. Secure this most sacred and productive time of the day for the most important and make sure you don’t manage your social accounts or check your phone before the first big task of the day is complete.
