A tropical storm warning is now in place for Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties as well as the Upper Keys as Tropical Storm Helene continues to strengthen. This is in addition to the existing tropical storm warnings for the Gulf coast from Flamingo north to the Anclote River and for the Lower and Middle Keys.
Helene is forecast to expand in size as well as strength once it enters the Gulf of Mexico, so the additional tropical storm warnings reflect the fact that all of South Florida will feel the effects of winds in excess of 39 miles per hour with higher gusts.
Tropical Storm Helene is expected to become a hurricane on Wednesday, and there’s a hurricane warning from the Anclote River to Indian Pass on the Florida panhandle. Landfall is forecast in that area for Thursday evening, but the weather will deteriorate rapidly much earlier on Thursday.
The additional warnings include a tropical storm warning for the Atlantic coast of Florida as far north as the St. Marys River, which is the border between Florida and Georgia. That means the entire state — with the exception of a small portion of the western panhandle — is now under a tropical storm warning or hurricane warning.
At 5 am Wednesday, TS Helene was located about 45 miles east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico and 120 miles southwest of the western tip of Cuba. Maximum sustained winds were 65 miles per hour, and Helene was moving northwest at 9 miles per hour.
